The ursokem tablet is a hepatoprotective medication. It works by reducing the cholesterol secretion from the liver, reduces the fractional reabsorption of the intestine, and helps dissolve gallbladder stones composed mainly of cholesterol. It also improves liver enzymes, protects liver cells from injury caused due to toxic bile acids, and improves liver function.

Primary biliary cholangitis (pbc), also known as primary biliary cirrhosis, is considered an autoimmune disease of the liver. It happens due to the slow destruction of the bile ducts in your liver, causing bile and other toxins to accumulate in the liver leads to a condition called cholestasis. This medication is either used alone or in combination. It can prevent liver damage if treatment is initiated within the early stages.

The most common side effects of this medication are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, hair loss, itching, and rash. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects may bother you.

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have an inflammation of the gallbladder or bile ducts or experienced any frequent cramp-like pain in your upper abdomen. You have been coughing up blood or rapid weight gain suddenly. Also, tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications for the disease as it can reduce or increase the effect of other medications. Alcohol consumption needs to be avoided while taking this medicine as it may cause excessive drowsiness.

Inform your doctor if you have had any previous history of allergy to this medication. During the treatment liver function test is monitored by your doctor through ultrasound scans or frequent blood tests. Women taking hormonal birth control pills should quit the pills as it can increase the production of gall stones.

For the better efficacy of the medicine, you must avoid smoking and alcohol consumption and maintain a healthy balanced weight. Adapt to the medication such that you will be taking this medication for the rest of your life.
