A BiPAP machine is a type of medical equipment that helps people with sleep apnea to breathe more easily during sleep. The machine blows air into the person's lungs through a mask, which splints open the airway and prevents it from collapsing. There are many different types of BiPAP machines on the market, but they all share a few common features. First, they have a motor that generates the airflow necessary to keep the airway open. Second, they have a controller that regulates the airflow based on the person's breathing pattern. Third, they have a mask that covers the nose and/or mouth, depending on the individual. A BiPAP machine is an abbreviation for “Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure”. It is a non-invasive ventilator which delivers two compression breaths separated by a small period of relaxation to assist people who have difficulty breathing, most notably those suffering from sleep apnea. The BiPAP machine acts as follows: The patient dons a facial mask which is attached to the BiPAP device via tubing. The BiPAP has two settings – inhalation pressure (IPAP) and exhalation pressure (EPAP). During inhalation, air flows through the tubing into the patient’s lungs at the IPAP setting.
