Q. Can men get breast lumps?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Yes, men can get breast lumps. In fact, male breast cancer is estimated to account for 1% of all cases of breast cancer. Breast lumps in men may be the result of a benign condition such as gynecomastia, which is an enlargement or swelling of the breasts caused by hormonal changes and commonly seen in adolescent boys. An evaluation by a healthcare provider is recommended to determine if the lump is caused by cancer or another condition that requires treatment.
In addition to breast lumps, other signs and symptoms associated with male breast cancer include: skin dimpling around the nipples; redness, scaling or thickening of the nipples; nipple discharge (not related to breastfeeding); swelling or hardening underarms; pain associated with any part of the chest area; and overall changes in how one’s chest looks or feels from recent months/years prior. If these are noticed it's important for individuals to contact their healthcare provider for an evaluation as soon as possible so that prompt diagnosis and treatment can be provided if necessary.
